Spirits Ascending

This quilt is an original design of mine. Thailand has always held a special place in my heart since my visit there in 1991. After the Tsunami struck Thailand and the surrounding countries, I wanted to make a quilt that reflected my feelings about that tragedy.

Spirit houses are found all over Thailand, and are a vital part of the Buddhist religion. People often place candles, incense, and food on these houses to keep the spirits happy. I used the image of a spirit house from a slide I took from my trip. Then I superimposed a huge wave of taffeta fabric over the bottom part of the “house” to represent the Tsunami. I glued Swarovski crystals coming out of the spirit house and ascending as spirits might.
